What we have here is absolutely unique... Home movies from 1928! I grew up in Number 25 Forrest road, in Lower Penarth. A small seaside town in South wales. The house was in a block of three that had been used by the staff of a mansion on the cliff that belonged to Henry Gethin Lewis, a rich industrialist. "Cliffside" was surrounded by a huge limestone wall topped with flagstones. There was a gate near my house. One day circa 1972, my frisbee caught the wind and went over the wall, I saw Mr Lewis in the grounds through the wrought iron gate and asked if I could get it. He said "come on round and have a look" so I did. The gardens were all overgrown with blackberries by that time, and the place had seen better days. I talked to Mr Lewis for hours, he had been a Squadron leader in the war and I told him about my grandmother who use to go out with Guy Gibson, Squadron leader of the Dam Busters, who also lived in Penarth. One day he called me through the gate and said " come round, I've got something for you". I found him near the stables and he handed me an old metal film box full of small round movie canisters and an old hand wound projector. " See if you can get that going" he said. Thanking him I rushed off home to check it out and I did manage to get it working and watch a few movies. There was a "Felix the Cat" movie, and a "Steamboat Willy" one too, along with home movies from 1928! Movies from Sark (one of the Channel isles) and Switzerland. I think that was the last time I saw him but I kept those treasures until 1989 when I left for Australia. My sister Louise held on to them till last year when she donated them to the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales. They restored them and transferred them to dvd. Louise sent me a copy so I converted it to mp4 and put a bit of contemporary music with them. And here they are! I don't know what happened to the Felix and Steamboat Willy ones, They may have been worth a bit, or they may have degraded too much? You can see the wall I talked of at 9.10, I lived on the other side of it. I see Porthkerry Aqueduct too, I believe he lived (and died) there. Cliffside was demolished and McMansions were built there after his death. My mum and dad moved to Barry when they got older. I moved to Australia but my daughter still lives in Penarth. I'll never forget Cliffside...
