Foods to Avoid with Braces and Why

Braces Explained: Foods to Avoid with Braces and Why? - - - Dr. Greg’s Recommend Hygiene Products - - - Oral B Toothbrush: https://amzn.to/2EFThqH Crest Gum Detoxify: https://amzn.to/2VupuGO Platypus Flosser: https://amzn.to/2NCf8lF ACT Alcohol Free Mouthwash: https://amzn.to/2NBJxRd Waterpik: https://amzn.to/2ILS2ud In today’s video we review what type of foods your orthodontist likely requests for you to avoid and why? 1] Hard foods The reason your orthodontist recommends that you avoid hard foods is that the braces are attached to your tooth and biting into hard foods can definitely shear the brackets off your teeth. When a bracket falls off even one tooth your treatment can be delayed significantly making it so that you stay in braces for longer! Foods include apples, carrots, ice, bread, corn on the cob, etc. 2] Sticky/sugary foods & drinks The reason why your orthodontist recommends for you to avoid sticky and sugary foods and drinks is that the bacteria in your mouth eats up sugar and the byproduct is acid! This acid causes your teeth to dissolve and this is the cause of cavities. The reason why we avoid these foods and drinks even more with braces is because there is more surface area for this sticky food to attach to with braces and it is harder to clean! Sugary and sticky foods and drinks include caramel, starbursts, soda, sports drinks, etc. 3] Foods & drinks that stain your teeth Foods & drinks that stain your teeth can make your teeth look more yellow and, well, stained. These foods & drinks are more likely to stain your teeth while you are in braces because it is harder to clean around the brackets. Also, if your teeth stain around the brackets, once the braces are removed, there will be a square portion of your teeth, under the brackets, that remains unstained. These can usually be resolved with whitening after the braces are removed. Foods / drinks include tea, curry, coffee and wine. What was the hardest food/drink to avoid that your orthodontist ask you to not eat/drink? As always, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them comments below! See you next time!
