DevEng C200: Design, Evaluate, and Scale Development Technologies

DevEng C200 provides project-based learning experience in the development of human-centered products, services, or systems. It teaches the mindsets, skill sets, and toolsets of design thinking, with a focus on its use in development. The course focuses on core phases of the design process: observing and noticing, framing and reframing, imagining and designing, and making and experimenting. Students learn the theory of change and methods for assessing potential impact of technology interventions, as well as ethnographic interviewing, webs of abstraction, ideation, and basics of both hardware and software prototyping. The class engages social impact designers from industry as speakers and coaches. DevEng C200 is a core course of UC Berkeley’s Master of Development Engineering, an innovative, 15-month interdisciplinary program merging technology and social impact. The program leverages design thinking and engineering methodology to train professionals to develop scalable, technology-driven solutions to complex societal challenges globally and locally.
