Turfgrass Management Careers and How to Move Up

https://workspace.oregonstate.edu/tur... Turfgrass management is an excellent career path. There are plenty of opportunities for you to excel and move up to higher-paying positions. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The career opportunities in turfgrass management are endless. You could go all over the United States and then to different countries. You could work at the Olympics. You could work at Augusta national. You could work all over the place doing turfgrass management. There are a lot of career options in the turfgrass industry that most people don't think about. A lot of people assume you have to work on a golf course, and that's not true. There are a variety of different career avenues you can take. Outside of some of the traditional maintenance roles in lawn and landscape, parks and rec, there are also positions in Extension Services and Master Gardener trainings, where you could be the turfgrass specialist. Sports fields are another option with a lot of demand. You can also work at schools. In Oregon, we have school IPM coordinators at each school who are in charge of all the pesticides applied to those schools. There are also landscapes such as estates or gardens that need turfgrass managers as well. So if you're not only interested in turf, maybe the landscape plant side can also be a good way to mix both of those things together. CERTIFICATIONS Superintendents, sports field managers, landscape contractors, all of these have their certification programs. For example, the golf course superintendents association (GCSAA) has certified superintendents who on average make more money than superintendents that are not certified. And it is a points-based system and a portion of those points come from your education. A lot of people come to the turfgrass industry as a second profession, and they're unable to move up as quickly as they want to because they don't have the educational background. So, the reason we developed this PACE program was to help people working in the turfgrass industry obtain an education that is also earning them points towards a certification. This could be a person managing or working at a golf course, a sports field, or a landscaping company. There are professional certifications inside of those career paths, and our education program is not just supplementing that, but providing points toward a professional certification. So, if you don't have a college degree, this OSU PACE program can be a supplement for those points towards your certification, and this program will allow you to complete your education in turfgrass relatively quickly and then move up or advance within the golf course or sports field you work at. If you're looking to become a certified golf course superintendent, you can take this online Turfgrass Management training and get GCSAA credit toward your certification. This could be a cost-effective and time-effective way of getting those points for the GCSAA golf course superintendent credits.
