How to identify Staphylococcus aureus using the Coagulase Test - Slide and Tube Method

The coagulase test is commonly used by microbiologists to assist in the rapid identification of Staphylococcus aureus. Coagulase is a bacterial enzyme that converts fibrinogen to fibrin, resulting in blood clotting. Because bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus have coagulase bound to their surface, they can disguise themselves as a blood clot, thus preventing phagocytosis by white blood cells.
