Soesterberg airforce base (USAF/RNlAF) was decommissioned in 2008 after being operational since 1913. During the Cold War the USAF 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) "Wolfhounds" was stationed at Soesterberg airforce base. A large US AF community was settled at "New Amsterdam" close nearby till 1994 when this contingent left the base and the base was left to the RNlAF till 2008. The terrain and runway are currently an important nature reserve with breeding birds and other wildlife and flora. The Dutch "National Militair Museum" (NMM) is located on the terrain (https://www.nmm.nl/en/) and welcomes many visitors from the Netherlands and beyond; worth a visit! Part of the current set-up off the runway, in a separate part of the terrain is a sailplane field where back in 1913 and beyond those "magnificent men in their flying machines" would start and land. The tarmac of the former runway (some 20 years ago the longest runway in The Netherlands; length 3077 meters, width 45 meters) for the fighter jets (and sometimes even C5 Galaxy transporters) seems in good order, and could be recommissioned i.m.o. in times of extreme international political tension.
