Accurascale Manor After 4 Months--The Good, The Bad, The Ugly (354)

About 4 months ago I reviewed the newly released Accurascale Manor 4-6-0 loco and gave it a thumbs up based on just a few days running. I was so impressed I turned around and immediately order a second loco to compliment the first. Since then I have had quite a bit of time explore all aspects of these locos and as a result I have found a few issues to share with you. In spite of these I still think these are a magnificent model and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone, as long as you are aware of these issues and are ready to roll with the punches. Below are my findings on controlling the Power Pack keep alive built into the ricuit board using non-LokSound decoders. Keep in miond tht the keep alive will not work with DC only locos. Through a contact at ESU I was able to find out that on the circuit board, pin 13 of the Next18 interface is used to control the PowerPack (this gets a bit technical). According to the NMRA standard, pin 13 is designated as Aux4. Then through my contacts at SoundTraxx I found out that on the Tsunami2 decoder I tried with the Manor, that translates to FX6, which is assigned to function button F27. Consequently all I had to do was bring up the button for function 27 on my NCE PowerCab throttle and turn it on. After that the PowerPack worked and I have stay alive power with a Tsunami2 decoder. If I turn it off again then the PowerPack does not work. It also should be turned off during programming, and then back on again when finished. This seems a simple solution until you consider that each decoder type will likely use a different function button. For example according to my contact at ESU, a LokPilot decoder uses F6 (Note, I don’t have a LokPilot decoder so could not test this). In the LokSound decoder I believe it is on by default but the decoder automatically turns it off during programming and back on afterwards. There is also the possibility that a decoder manufacturer may not have made any provisions at all for controlling pin 13. At any rate unless this is spelled out explicitly in the instructions, an owner would have to contact the manufacturer of their decoder to find out how pin 13 is controlled which may be a problem and I don’t know of any comprehensive list of these assignments. It also may be necessary for a modeler to program their decoder to do this, which for some would be a challenge.
