This documentary portrait joins pianist Leif Ove Andsnes during his concerts and rehearsals. It looks at the prodigious talent that has propelled the young pianist from his small island home off the west coast of Norway onto the world’s major concert and recital platforms and meets the good-looking pianist who reveals himself to be an independently minded artist of profound musical intelligence. The cameras follow Andsnes to recital engagements at Carnegie Hall in New York and Copenhagen, and he is seen playing and working on repertoire ranging from Prokofiev, Brahms, Janáček, Smetana, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Schumann and Beethoven to Liszt, Antheil and Kurtag. There is footage of Andsnes performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Valery Gergiev and the New York Philharmonic, as soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic conducted by Simone Young, as well as working with Heinrich Schiff and Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra on Brahms’ Concerto No. 1.
