Discovering Warrensburg, MO on Foot

Warrensburg, Missouri, was founded in 1835 by European-American settlers John and Martin D. Warren. The town was named after Martin Warren, who had a log cabin at what is now College and Gay Streets. Warrensburg was platted in 1836, and incorporated in 1855. It is the seat of Johnson County, and home to the campus of the University of Central Missouri (originally the Second District State Normal School). The town grew rapidly in the early 1800s, due to its location along the Osage Indian Trail and its status as the county seat. By 1850, the population of Warrensburg was 241 and the town had a flour mill, a carding machine, a foundry, and a woolen mill. For the most part the town was organized around marketing and shipping agricultural products from the surrounding farms. When the Civil War erupted in Missouri in 1861, most of the economic activity in Warrensburg was curtailed. The town was briefly occupied by Union forces in 1862, but it was mostly spared from the violence of the war. After the war, Warrensburg rebounded and continued to grow. The town's location along the newly-built Missouri Pacific Railroad made it a major transportation hub for the region. In 1870, the University of Central Missouri was founded in Warrensburg, which further boosted the town's economy.
