SOUNDBITE (Czech) Petr Skala, keeper of Astronomical Clock on Prague Old Town Hall: "It faces south, it faces the sun, the rain, the frost. The sculptures are made of wood and they were meant to be placed in the open but they can't survive forever; you have to take care of them, otherwise they will get destroyed." 10. Wide of van driving away with figurines inside STORYLINE: One of the Czech Republic's most famous landmarks is undergoing a facelift. Workers on Friday carefully removed four painted figurines from the face of Prague's medieval Astronomical Clock, which adorns the tower of the Old Town Hall in the Czech capital. Over the next two months workers will be restoring the figures, which have been battered by weather conditions. Clock keeper Petr Skala explained. The clock he said, "faces south, it faces the sun, the rain, the frost. The sculptures are made of wood and they were meant to be placed in the open but they can't survive forever; you have to take care of them, otherwise they will get destroyed." The four figures to be repaired flank the clock and are set in motion when the clock strikes the hour. They are: Death, represented by a skeleton, Vanity, represented by a man admiring himself in the mirror, Greed, represented by a man holding a bag of gold, and a beturbanned figure holding a loot who represents pleasure and entertainment. Once the figures are back in place, the 12 Apostles who sit in doorways above the clock will be repaired, four at a time. Skala said the clock, which was installed in 1410, won't be shut down during the restoration. Legend has it that when the clock stops the capital faces catastrophe. It was partially damaged during World War II and was restored to working order in 1948. The last time the clock stopped for unknown reasons, in 2002, the city had a devastating record flood shortly afterwards.
