Deeper Than the Surface A Film By Nico Ponnekanti Diver, filmmaker, and adventure enthusiast, Nico Ponnekanti has been diving for five years, but has been in love with the ocean and filmmaking almost his whole life. Nico earned his scuba certifications at ten years old, and started making scuba diving films too. He dives mainly in the Puget Sound with Annie Crawley’s Dive Team but has dived and traveled in Mexico, California and in other destinations. Diving has always been one of the most special experiences as it unlocks the other 70% of our world. Nico plans on diving as long as he can! He is a PADI Ambassadiver and uses his filmmaking skills as a voice for our ocean. Deeper Than the Surface is a film set in the Pacific Northwest, featuring a number of the creatures found in the Puget Sound area of the Salish Sea. The film highlights one impact of ocean acidification, the breaking down of the calcium carbonate that crabs and other animals need to build their shells. The film draws attention to the prominent problem this poses to animals in the Pacific Northwest. Many animals, including people rely on crabs and mollusks as their main food source. The main objective with Deeper Than the Surface was to inspire those who aren’t divers themselves to start thinking of the ocean in a more meaningful way. In other words, the film is intended to create a picture in people’s minds of the ocean as more than just sharks and the deep unknown which can often perpetuate fears. Many people don’t realize that the ocean has many ecosystems that are unique and different than those on land. And people don’t fully realize just how much the ocean provides for us. The food we eat and the air we breathe comes from the sea. This film is intended to draw the viewer’s attention to connecting with the sea, and relating the audience to some of the many problems happening in the ocean right now.
