16th Asean Summit (Opening Ceremony)

Opening Ceremony of the 16th ASEAN Summit Hanoi, Vietnam 8 April 2010 The 16th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit formally opened as Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung welcomed the ten ASEAN Heads of States in the ceremonies held at the National Convention Center (NCC) in Hanoi. Prime Minister Tan Dung proudly stated that after more than four decades of existence and development, ASEAN has become a closely-integrated political and economic entity, and a significant player in the region. It has also become an important partner of major countries and organizations in the world, as well. In his statement, Prime Minister stated the issues and concerns that he proposed to be given attention to: First, to make stronger efforts in bringing ASEAN Charter to life, most importantly with the finalization of related legal documents, and the improvement of ASEANs new organizational structure and working method. Second, to prioritize economic recovery and sustainable development of ASEAN, as well as the international community. This includes the acceleration of ASEAN economic integration, the enhancement of East Asian economic and financial cooperation, and the active contribution to the common efforts of the international community through the promotion of global solutions. Third, to focus on global issues such as climate change, environmental destruction, and natural disasters and pandemics, which become threats to the livelihood of the people of ASEAN and in the sustainable development of the different countries. Fourth, to continue the members determination in promoting peace, security and cooperation for mutual development. This includes maximizing the effectiveness of the existing mechanisms designed to promote peace and security such as the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapons Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). And fifth, to further consolidate external relations, and to organize support for ASEAN Community building its international role and position. Prime Minister Tan Dung also hoped that substantive and fruitful discussions with the other leaders of ASEAN will be achieved. Together with other ASEAN Heads of States, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo witnessed the cultural presentation that showcased the culture of Vietnam after Prime Minister Tan Dung opened the conference. * *
