National Palace of Culture - Sofia Bulgaria Congress Centre: The National Palace of Culture, abbreviated in Bulgarian as NDK,is the largest, multifunctional conference and exhibition centre in south-eastern Europe. It was opened in 1981 in celebration of Bulgaria's 1300th anniversary. The centre was initiated at the suggestion of Lyudmila Zhivkova, daughter of the communist leader of the former People's Republic of Bulgaria Todor Zhivkov. The project was designed by a team of Bulgarian and foreign architects. The Palace is located in downtown Sofia and is surrounded by a park area.In July 2005, the National Palace of Culture was proclaimed the best congress centre in the world for the year by the International Organization of Congress Centres. The conference centre is equipped to host a variety of events, including concerts, multilingual conferences, exhibitions, and shows. It has an area of 123,000 square meters on eight floors and three underground levels. The National Palace of Culture has 13 halls and 15,000 square meters of exhibition area, a trade centre and a car park. The main hall can seat over 3,000 people. The Sofia International Film Festival takes place in the NDK.More than 10,000 tons of steel were used for the construction of the NDK. That is3,000 tons more than the Eiffel Tower.Mounted high on the facade, The National Palace of Culture features a stylized sun, executed in full compliance with the original traditions of Bulgarian National Revival woodcarving traditions. The Memorial of the First Sofia Infantry Regiments-It's a powerful looking memorial, a beautifully sculpted lion, the symbol of Bulgaria, and an inscription in both Bulgarian and English outlining the reason the memorial is here. •Piece of Berlin Wall-There are pieces of the Berlin Wall all around the world and you can even find some on eBay. Face the main entrance of NDK, then turn left and head to the Fridtj of Nansen Str. and Vassil Levski Blvd. Right before you cross the street, look left and there is the monument! 2•The bridge of the lovers-The pedestrian bridge in the city center next to National palace of Culture has actually no name, but has always been known as The Bridge of the Lovers. That is because it was commonly used place for meetings of young people in love.This bridge easily becomes one of the tourist’s favorite spots when there is an open air gallery.
