Kathleen MacInnes at TEDxGlasgow 2016

Kathleen is a world renowned artist. With two award winning albums, performances with the legendary ‘Transatlantic Sessions’ crew, a performance for Ridley Scott on the soundtrack of ‘Robin Hood’ 2009, a nominee in Saltire Scotland Twitter’s choice ‘Most Outstanding Woman of Scotland’ social media poll 2015, Kathleen lives in Glasgow with her partner Tommy and their 3 sons. She explains, 'I was born on the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. Immersed from my earliest years in the Gaelic language, I was raised on piping tunes and Latin hymns and didn’t speak any English until I went to Garrynamonie Primary School during the 70s/80s. This was a period when Gaelic was going through a steep decline and disruption after centuries of depopulation and the replacement of the Gaelic musical tradition by mainstream English- language aesthetics. Despite this being detrimental to maintaining our culture, the island, in common with the rest of the Hebrides, is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Gaelic language in Scotland. South Uist was well known for great pipers but the British Army, Highland Games, and Piping Competitions became the new patrons and with this came new ideas about music and attempts were made to replace local styles of singing with operatic, stage style singing. Both styles have remained in today’s Gaelic culture. I left home at 15 and entered a period of beautiful chaos and disruption in my life, to study, work and travel in many countries. I returned to Gaelic culture to perform and sing at the age of 29 with new eyes and this is my version of Gaelic music– inspired by ancient sounds and vocables of the songs and a love of the natural rhythm of my language.'
