(content and rights to this material is held by original publisher) The Best of Hot Tracks (Vol 1) white cover and (Vol 2) red cover were re-releases of some classic Hot Tracks mixes (released on both vinyl and CD). Stephanie Mills – Pilot Error is one of these mixes. The mixes on both issues were "re-created". The original tapes/mixes were in marginal condition (or may have been lost). But the "theme" and song structure each song were not significantly changed, BUT changes were made: corrected phrasing (beat counts), more exact edits, better source material (many were recreated from CD rather than 12" vinyl). All of the songs had to re-built from scratch. since none of the original tapes were used. For Pilot Error (and the other mixes I did on both issues) I outlined the original HT version (counted all the "beats" (quarter notes) in each phrase: verse, refrain, chorus, instrumental breaks). After the entire song was outlined, I identified any parts that had extra beats, odd counts, or unequal length beats and made notes what needed to be corrected to make the timing and phrasing correct. Source material from CD was used (when available) and the song was reconstructed as originally edited (fixing any timing and other issues) Many of the songs were shortened to "tighten" up the new version. There were more than a few DJs that were upset the tracks on these 2 issues were not the same exact same mix/version as originally released. But there was NO way the originals were going to be exactly recreated. The originals had many issues: with offbeat, uneven beat count, song structure and phrasing issues and errors. The recreated versions are improved from the original (and were also available on CD)
