In this video, we'll climb to the top of the famous Elephant Trunk Hill (Chinese: 象鼻山; 象山; pinyin: Xiàngbí Shān), a prominent landmark in the charming & picturesque tier 3 city of Guilin (Kweilin) in China's beautiful Guangxi (Kwangsi) province. Elephant Trunk Hill, located at the confluence of the Taohua River & the Lijiang River, is so named because it resembles an elephant drinking from the river. The hill has a round opening known as the Water Moon Cave (水月洞), which is located between the elephant's "trunk" & "body". At night, the moon's reflection in the cave looks like it's floating on the water's surface, creating a unique sight. The hill & caves also contain a number of stone inscriptions, some dating back to the Tang & Song dynasties. At the top of this hill sits an ancient structure called the Puxian Pagoda (普贤塔; 瓶塔), also known as the Samantabhadra Tower. This antique Buddhist stupa was constructed during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) & is dedicated to the Samantabhadra (lit. "Universal Worthy", "All Good"), an important bodhisattva. In Chinese Buddhism, Samantabhadra is known as Pǔxián & is typically portrayed seated atop an elephant, hence the appropriate location atop Elephant Hill.
