If the reading is below 3V, then there must be corrosion somewhere in the battery cap, replace it with a working one and you may just saved yourself a lot of headache trying to replace the capacitor! I overlooked this simple but serious issue, after replacing capacitors on a Minolta X-700 that I acquired, which appears to show the classic symptom of the failed capacitor (no display with battery inserted) How I discovered the issue is that after replacing the suspected capacitor, the camera is still not functioning properly.
