What is Anosmia & its causes? - Dr. Gayatri S Pandit

Anosmia means loss of smell sensation. In the human body, the smell sensation is carried by a special kind of a cranial nerve called as the olfactory nerve, which is situated on the roof of the nose. The condition causing anosmia can be as simple as viral flu which causes a temporary anosmia to a tumor which is there in the nose, constructing the olfactory passage or there can be a degenerative changes of the nerves such as in the Alzheimers, Parkinson’s or it can be even a congenital disorder of the mucosal glands etc such as the kallmann syndrome or it can be small mass obstructing the nasal pathway such as the nasal polyps etc.
