Episode 5 of the story about our move to Norway. After an 18-month hiatus from production, the series is back. I have completed my research. Consequently, Darcy, Alki, Ruby and I are finally settling into our new life. This episode is a personal essay about what we have grown to love about Norway, the challenges and idiosyncrasies of life in Bergen, and my personal experience as a “non-traditional” graduate school student (read: older than most of my professors.) It is a love letter to our new town and its amazing community. The video is in three acts. The first is a taste of daily life. The second act explores academic life, and the third ace documents the culmination of two years of work. To access the book or audio book that I mention in the video: Computational Creativity in Media Production: At the Crossroads of Progress and Peril Click here to download the files http://bit.ly/42BKDSo The book is available as a free audio book or .pdf file. Our move to Bergen has impacted every facet of our lives. When I arrived in August of 2021 the pandemic restricted travel in and out of the country. A consequence of these limitations was my wife and I could not relocate to Norway together. The first four videos in this series are a chronicle of what I learned, what I experienced, and how I grew to love my new life in Norway as I lived on my own, waiting for her arrival. Their focus is on my personal experiences along each step of the journey. If you are looking for strategies to assist you on your own personal transition to Norway there are a number of outstanding online resources. First and foremost, I recommend the Life in Norway website (https://www.lifeinnorway.net/), and more specifically, their Moving to Norway section (https://www.lifeinnorway.net/moving-t.... Author David Nikel has done a very thorough job of aggregating helpful links, offering advice on navigating the system. It is updated regularly, and for my wife and I the website was an invaluable resource in the early stages of our journey. I also recommend you stay on top of the news and events here. One source of solid information is The Local's Norway section (https://www.thelocal.no/). This is a subscription news service, but I find I refer to it daily -- both in the states and especially now that I live in the country. For a fun, and often insightful, take on how an expat lives in Norway, check out the A Frog in the Fjord blog (https://afroginthefjord.com/). Lorelou Desjardins is a wonderful writer (her book by the same title is a fun read.) She documented her observations about her own transition to life in Norway with wit and charm. Don't forget to bookmark Norway's immigration website (https://udi.no/) as you will be there often throughout the process. There are many YouTube resources that I leveraged prior to moving. A few current ones include channels from @Simon Braeck, @Cecilia Blomdahl, and @Anna Goldman) but the websites listed above are what helped us create a strategy for making the transition.
