The most notorious King of England was Henry VIII and he is best remembered for his brutal side but also the fact he was married 6 times, and had 6 different wives. The wives of Henry VIII had very different fates, but possibly the most tragic of them all was Catherine Howard, the fifth wife of the Tudor King. It’s believed that when Henry VIII married Catherine, he was 49 years old but Catherine was just between 15 to 21 years of age, and the huge age gap would signal the doomed short lived marriage which led to the execution of Henry’s wife. On the 13th February 1542, Catherine Howard made her way to the executioner’s scaffold inside of the walls of the Tower of London. It took the executioner one strike of the axe to take Catherine’s head clean off, however what happened after this with her burial was shocking and barbaric, and was not fit for a woman who was married to the King. But what is the story of opening the coffin of Henry VIII’s fifth wife?
