Dear Authentic Believers, In today's readings, James tells us two important things. The first is that mercy is greater than judgment. Simply put: err on the side of kindness and generosity rather than on the side of judging others. We are never going to get in trouble with God for being too kind or too generous. Whereas, we might very well get in trouble with God for judging others harshly or otherwise. The second message from James tells us that faith without works is not faith at all. If our actions lives do not line up with our words and beliefs, then we are just hypocrites. I think of former president, Jimmy Carter and his lived actions that corresponded with his faith. I think of Dr. Charles Stanley, a TV preacher who, for most of his life, had an annual salary comparable to a Dear Authentic Believers, In today's readings, James tells us two important things. I think of former president, Jimmy Carter and his lived actions that corresponded with his faith. I think of Dr. Charles Stanley, a TV preacher who, for most of his life, had an annual salary comparable to a school teacher and wore off-the-rack suits. In his last years he made a considerable salary and lived in a 2.5 million dollar historical home, but Dr. Stanley was never ostentatious nor did he preach the "prosperity gospel" or instill fear of the "the final days" as did many of his televangelist counterparts. In Mark's gospel, Jesus frees a young child from a demon and heals a man who is deaf and has a pronounced speech impediment. It is Jesus' actions that give power to his words. Because Jesus' actions aligned with his words, we are preaching his message of good news 2000 years later. If Jesus had just talked a good game but had no actions to back up his words he would have been relegated to the obscurity of time and forgotten. The message from James and the example of Jesus are clear: Our lives must be lives where our faith, words, and actions are all in harmony with each other. Our lived actions support our faith and our faith supports our lived actions. Faith, without works, is dead. Amen Please continue to pray for peace, pray for an end to violence in our society and our schools, and pray that we are more committed to finding solutions rather than assigning blame for problems in society. Please pray for those who have asked for our prayers. Pray for those that need our prayers, but have not asked. Pray for those that no one may be praying for that have been lost or forgotten. Please Remember to be grateful of the bounty and abundance we enjoy and those that grow, tend, harvest, process and produce the food we eat. May God bless you in the coming weeks of September and the early signs of fall. Shalom, Pastor Jack Schneider • Sermons from the Woodshop September 8...
