56.52lb Shibi (Yellowfin Tuna) but Lost a Whale! | Kayak Fishing Hawaii

Summary: Between OPP tournament events so just a normal fishing day, unfortunately haha. Gloomy start to the day, but at least the akule and opelu were present. Landed a nice size yellow fin tuna, but the second strike was a giant that we will never truly know about. I believe it may have wrapped my line on an underwater buoy or cable on his third run when he traversed back west because he had about 600 YARDS of line out and it was straight down, but I was only in 300ft of water. He was so kind as to leave about 20ft of braid left for me in my reel. This fish was distributed for #FishingForPhilman to help support my buddy in his fight against cancer. Kayak: 2014 Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14 Fish Finder: Garmin Echmap Plus 64CV (https://a.co/d/7pXJpP7) Main and backup rods: Silver Hook 6'6" Medium Heavy, Shimano Trevala 5'8" Extra Heavy Bait rod: Shimano Grappler Type J (it was for my old conventional depth counter reel, but I swill use it with a spinner, probably why the line makes noise when I reel it in) Reels: Shimano SpeedMaster 25ii (https://a.co/d/8EkZHpP), Penn Squal 50LD (aka “the lucky reel” https://a.co/d/4e1nOBL), Shimano Stella SW 5000 (Bait Reel https://a.co/d/1o3UXaC), Penn Spinfisher VI 8500 (Hilo Main Reels https://a.co/d/9ES1yQQ), Shimano TwinPower 5000 (Hilo Bait Reel https://a.co/d/4nPNush). Line and terminal tackle: 65-80 lb PowerPro (https://a.co/d/bvOGdsx), 40/50/60lb J-Line Fluorocarbon, 40-55lb AFW wire leader. Owner Tournament Mutu 4/0 circle hooks (Tokunagas), Gamakatsu 4/0 & 5/0 live bait hooks, Diablo or VMC 2/0 inline hooks for stinger when using wire (hifishgear.com BKK Lone Diablo Inline Hook — HiFishGear). Damashi: Homemade using line between 12-16lb, typically J-Flouro Samurai. The flies I tie my own, but I used to use CHL Nox Minnows with gold hooks and a red bead with great effectiveness and highly recommend them. Camera: GoPro Hero 8 Black, GoPro Hero 9 Black Note: I link the amazon links for ease of finding products and ease or purchase/delivery, but I highly recommend shopping at your local fishing stores and support them. #hobie #hobiekayakfishing #shimano #trevala #pelagicfishing #fishing #fishinglife #nature #outdoors #bigfish #kayakfishinghawaii #angler #photography #wheresdahi
