This music started off in one direction, but then reading a brief poem by Peter Levitt turned it in another direction entirely. A gentle poem, read during the same week that the world’s attention was turned to the mass shootings of innocent people in two cities in the United States, it’s imagery of petals falling like past lives, struck home – and became the theme of this symphony. THE POEMS It can’t be held I cup a rose in my hand – undone, the petals fall through my fingers like past lives. (Peter Levitt) O Rose thou art sick. The invisible worm, That flies in the night In the howling storm: Has found out thy bed Of crimson joy: And his dark secret love Does thy life destroy. (William Blake) Nothing in the cry of cicadas suggests they are about to die (Basho, translated by Sam Hamill) It’s easy to die. Just give your breath back to the trees and the wind.
