Iraqi antiquities recovered in New York

(18 Jan 2022) Officials from Iraq and the Manhattan District Attorney's office gathered on Tuesday to mark the repatriation of priceless ancient artifacts seized in the illegal antiquities trade. Two of the pieces on display Tuesday were objects purchased by billionaire Michael Steinhardt -- an 8th century B.C. gold bowl, and an ivory plaque. Last month, Steinhardt surrendered 180 artifacts valued at roughly $70 million as part of a landmark deal with the Manhattan District Attorney's office to avoid prosecution. The items also included artifacts from Israel. Investigators say the gold bowl was looted from Nimrud, Iraq and eventually trafficked by the Islamic State group, and was first spotted in 2019 when US Customs and Border officials caught someone hand-carrying the relic for Steinhardt on a flight from Hong Kong to Newark International Airport. Investigators say the ivory plaque once belonged to the King of Sargon, who ruled in an area of present-day Iraq from 721 to 725 B.C. It's valued at $450,000. Other items in the collection displayed Tuesday were seized as part of separate investigations. Museums worldwide are facing greater scrutiny over the provenance — or chain of ownership — of their art, particularly those looted from conflict zones or illegally plundered from archaeological sites. There are growing calls for such items to be returned to their countries of origin.
