In the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, Crusader forces led by the young "Leper King" Baldwin IV achieved a surprising victory against the significantly larger forces of Saladin, the renowned warrior and Sultan of Egypt and Syria. The Templar knights supported by the determination of King Baldwin IV are believed to have played a crucial role with their disciplined heavy cavalry charges. As the vanguard, they led a daring and unexpected charge against Saladin's force catching the Muslim army off guard. The Templars' relentless assault broke Saladin's lines, leading to a chaotic retreat and a decisive victory for the Crusaders. Approximately 90% of Saladin's army was either killed or scattered. However, Saladin did get his revenge eventually. King Baldwin IV, stricken by his illness, died in 1185 at the age of 23, and was succeeded by a less capable leader. Sultan Saladin regrouped his forces and decisively defeated the Crusader army at the Battle of Hattin in 1187, where he captured and executed every Templar Knight he could find.
