With Doc Ock surviving the first installment of Insomniac's new series of Spider-Man games. We wonder if he and his degenerative muscle condition will come back into play in later installments. Could we see this version of Doc Ock follow the path of his comic book counterpart and become the Superior Spider-Man? And then the Superior Venom? We know in Spider-Man 2 Venom will be arriving, so perhaps Spider-Man 3 or other future sequels will see Ock possess one of the Spider-Man and then go toe to toe with the other--Spider-Man vs. Spider-Man. So, films like Spider-Man No Way Home and Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse introduced audiences to the idea of multiple Spider-Men throughout the Marvel Multiverse. But what if I told you that in the comics there’s a version of Peter’s Parker’s Spider-Man that isn’t actually Peter Parker at all. When on the verge of death, Doc Ock was able to transfer his consciousness into the body of Spider-Man. And thus Spider-Man’s consciousness into the body of Doc Ock. The body of Doc Ock then dies, which means the consciousness of Peter Parker, dies. Doc Ock then goes on to live his life as Spider-Man, or as he calls himself, the Superior Spider-Man. Now while I doubt we’ll be seeing something like this pan out in any of the Spider-Man films. I think it’s possible we see the Spider-Man game adopt this story. So real quick let's talk about the game. When Insomniac Games released the first Spider-Man video game since 2011’s Edge of Time, great game by the way. [clip] I’m not sure we the fans were quite prepared for this new game to give us one of the most comic accurate, yet fresh takes on the wall crawler since Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. Both of which include Doc Ock. So, in the game, Ock says that he’s suffering from a degenerative muscle disease, leaving his brain intact but taking away the motor functions in his body. The game has an ending scene of him staring ominously at the camera while in prison, probably planning his next evil scheme. [clip, Ultron] In the Superior Spider-Man comic, Doc Ock has a similar condition. So he devises a plan to transfer his mind into Spider-Man’s body. He succeeds in doing so, but the transfer allows Ock access to all of Peter’s memories for a brief moment. He experiences all of the life lessons that molded Peter into the hero he is. Into the Spider-Man he is. So Ock sets out to be an even better Spider-Man than Peter was. A Superior Spider-Man. [clip, oh he said the thing] The comic ran for about a year and a half starting in 2013. And while fans like myself were initially turned off by Peter Parker being killed off in the main Marvel timeline, it ended up being a pretty decent series. One of the best things about it was the parallels it drew between Peter and Otto as rivals. Both of them are brilliant and they both suffered an accident that changed their lives forever. But a key difference between the two is how they were raised. Peter was raised by a loving aunt and uncle who taught him about kindness, decency, and responsibility. [clip] Doc Ock on the other hand was raised by an abusive father. And, some iterations of the character have Ock being controlled by his mechanical arms which also sway his judgment. Anyway, this comic saw Doc Ock’s Spider-Man become increasingly more violent. [clip, stopped pulling punches] And as for Otto’s time as Peter Parker, well, things got a little weird. At first, he tries to continue Peter’s relationship with Mary Jane. We get this scene where Ock as Peter is hooking up with MJ. But then we as the reader see memories of Peter and MJ, but in Peter’s place we see Doc Ock’s body, and it's just weird. And it gets even weirder when we learn that Peter’s subconscious survived the mind swap and is still lingering in the depths of his mind. He’s observing everything that’s transpiring and begins to narrate. But we’re the only ones that can hear him. Now let’s talk Venom. In the Superior Spider-Man comic we see Ock as Spider-Man steal the Venom symbiote from Agent Venom. Venom’s current host was Flash Thompson, Peter Parker’s high school bully, not Eddie Brock. He gained the symbiote from SHIELD after losing both his legs in combat. Ock thought that he could control the symbiote better than Peter did when he was bonded with the symbiote. Now after the events of Secret Wars we see the 616 universe and Ultimates Universe combine, making it to where Peter and Miles can work together.
