Real-Time LiDAR SLAM Mapping on a Campus Using Handheld Sensor 3

This video showcases the results of LiDAR SLAM implemented using a handheld device equipped with a Velodyne VLP16 LiDAR and a MicroStrain 3DM-GX5-25 IMU. The experiment takes place on a university campus, where the user walks around with the sensor, capturing data to build a detailed 3D map of the environment. As the user returns to the starting point, the system processes the collected data in real-time, demonstrating the accuracy of the SLAM algorithm. The video highlights the system's ability to handle complex environments with buildings and trees, providing both qualitative and quantitative insights into the performance of the SLAM system in outdoor environments. All methods were implemented in C++ and executed using ROS on a laptop running Ubuntu Linux.
