CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Local health care providers continue to remind everyone about eye safety this Monday as everyone will gather to watch the solar eclipse. Sad but true, eye doctors do expect to see people who do experience eye damage. Dr. Steve Christiansen from Cincinnati Eye Institute has a green screen in his basement like the one that Local 12 has for its weather wall, and has been warning people now about eye damage with videos on YouTube. Local 12 and Liz Bonis talked with him at CEI in Blue Ash, where he said it's sad, but people may just look at the sun too long without proper protection on Monday during the eclipse and that is what his team is worried about. That raises the risk for their main concern, which is solar retinopathy. “It can be a serious condition that can permanently damage your vision, unfortunately we do anticipate that there will be some folks that didn't hear the public service announcements or the warnings and will come into our clinic with symptoms of vison loss,” said Dr. Christiansen. “The retina is kind of like, you can think of the film in a camera, the retina kind of serves a similar function, where the light enters the eye through the cornea, and then it goes through the lens of our eye, and then it focuses all that light on the retina, which is on the back of the eye,” said Dr. Christiansen. That means if you look at the sun during the eclipse too long it can cause temporary or even permanent vision loss. Dr. Christiansen says you can get similar damage if someone points a laser at your eye. “In addition to that we would then do some additional tests which actually show the layers of the retina in cross section, and show the various layers of the retina in cross section, and show the various layers that had actually suffered the damage,” said Dr. Christiansen. To prevent that, you need to watch the eclipse with glasses that have ISO approval. The glasses that are approved for watching the eclipse filter all but 0.00032 percent of the sun’s total light, which is perfect for the total eclipse.
