Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology is a national "double first-class" construction university, and a Class A construction university in Jiangsu's high-level university construction peak plan. The school was born to serve the national strategy of New China and the needs of national economic construction. In 1960, the School of Meteorology of Nanjing University (the predecessor of the school) was established under the former Central (Military Commission) Meteorological Bureau. In 1963, it was independently established as the Nanjing Meteorology Institute. In 1978, it was listed as a National Key Universities. In 2000, it was transferred to the People's Government of Jiangsu Province. In 2004, it was renamed as Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. Since 2007, the school has realized the joint construction of the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, the China Meteorological Administration, the Ministry of Education, the State Oceanic Administration and other parties. Currently, it is a central and local jointly built university mainly managed by Jiangsu Province. The students won the gold medal of China's "Internet plus" Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the grand prize of the "Challenge Cup" National Undergraduate Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, the grand prize of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, the first prize of the China Postgraduate Electronic Design Competition and many other top prizes in the competition. The winning rate of students participating in provincial-level or above discipline competitions reaches over 50%, ranking 55th on the national college student competition list. In the past three years, there have been 614 awards in graduate competitions at or above the provincial level, of which 251 have been awarded at the national level. The implementation rate of undergraduate graduation destination is over 95%, and the enrollment rate (including going abroad) is over 42%. Since its establishment, the school has trained over 200000 graduates of various types. Among its alumni, a group of outstanding talents have emerged, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, leaders of ministries and commissions, executives of state-owned enterprises, strategic experts, and officials of international organizations.
