staying with nomads in the moutains of iran | solo female travel

The Leisure Club's instagram:   / the.leisureclub   During my time in Iran, I had the opportunity to do a homestay with the Qashqai nomads in the Zagros mountains. I stayed with them for 3 days and I had no idea what to expect. Bahman was my guide and he was born and raised in the Zagros mountains as a nomad. Iran has one of the biggest populations of authentic nomads in the world, with the Qashqai people being one of the most prominent tribes. They travel and set up camp every summer and winter with their entire flock. Bahman picked me up from my hostel in Shiraz in his 4WD and we drove into the mountains. We arrived at his family's camp, which was totally isolated and surrounded by beautiful mountains. They had sheep, goats, chickens, donkeys and sheep dogs, all playing a part in their nomadic lifestyle. When we arrived, Bahman's mother was feeding the goats and making fresh bread which she does every morning. Bahman made some breakfast for us using tomatoes and freshly laid eggs. Having a traditional Qashqai nomad breakfast overlooking the Zagros mountains was truely spectacular. Throughout the day, I was able to observe the daily routine of Bahman's family, which including collecting firewood, feeding the animals, preparing food and much more. During the nighttime, we gathered around the fire where the dinner was being prepared. Once we had dinner (which was delicious), we settled down in the family room where everyone slept on the floor, with multiple blankets to make sure to stay cosy and warm. In the morning, I was woken up by the sound of the chickens and animals, while Bahman's family was already up and about, doing various nomad tasks. Bahman made breakfast for us, with fresh tea, fresh bread and fresh eggs. It is truely an incredible lifestyle and I am so grateful to have been able to observe Bahman and his family.
