A Tour of the MBTA Green Line in Boston

The history of subways in the US started in the 1890s, when Boston relocated some of its streetcars from the busy streets of downtown to a new underground tunnel. Those tracks today are used by the Green Line, making segments of this line the oldest subway in America. The Green Line today consists of 4 routes: B from Boston College to Government Center C D from E from Heath St to Union Square (will be Medford/Tufts) These start individually in the western suburbs of the city before joining together in a tunnel for the downtown section. High frequencies on the routes means a very high number of trains on the shared downtown segments. Oh, and the trains on this line are light rail vehicles. The green line is hated by many commuters because of its slow speeds (old and curvy tracks) and it’s chaotic signaling, meaning departure times aren’t always accurately displayed. But there are some good things about this line. It offers great connectivity and high frequencies. What I liked most about this line was how sometimes trains would follow each other very closely. I also liked many of the unusual stations, with weird track layouts or old trams on display. All in all, I greatly enjoyed riding this line. If you’re in Boston, definitely check it out!
