Hydronic Zoning of 100 Year Old Cast Iron Radiator System--The Manifold

Hydronic Manifold Upgrade to cast Iron Radiator System. When I purchased this 100 year-old home one of the few upgrades it had was a relatively new 83% efficient boiler. However, the system was plumbed with black iron pipe that hung low in the basement, and I kept hitting my head on it. So, I decided to remove the iron piping, install a manifold and connect each radiator to a separate manifold port. After consulting with Mike, a/k/a Mikey Pipes ‪@PipeDoctor‬ who provided tons of helpful information I set out to plumb the entire system with three-quarter inch oxygen-free PEX A tubing. The manifold is plumbed to the boiler with inch and a quarter copper pipe with sweated connections. I did invest in an expansion tool for the PEX system, but I couldn’t bring myself to invest in pro-press so I did the copper pipe the old-fashioned way. For this project, Mikey pipes, who has many great videos here, was a huge help. He recommended Supplyhouse.com which I used for much of the materials resulting in huge savings. I did purchase a couple of 24 inch pipe wrenches from Harbor Freight with aluminum handles, which were essential for removing 100 year-old pipe fittings. That along with my bandsaw and the carbide tooth blade on a saws-all was key to removing the old piping. He also told be to be sure to get a helper, so I wouldnt hurt myself! I gotta say this was a tough project and tested the limits of my ability, but I am very pleased with the result.
