Are you ready for the “Big One”? Caltrans is. SAN BERNARDINO — There are more than 12,000 bridges in the California State Highway system. Caltrans initiated a Seismic Retrofit Program in 1971 after the Sylmar earthquake, which struck the Los Angeles area and damaged several bridges. The program focused on seismic retrofitting and bridge expansion joints for bridges throughout the state. In this Caltrans News Flash, learn what Caltrans has done to prepare for large scale earthquakes at major interchanges and bridge structures. Also learn what Caltrans does when a magnitude 5.0 quake or larger occurs.
