In honor of Earth Day, we will be trying wines certified by Lodi Rules, California's first 3rd party-certified sustainable winegrowing program. To learn more about the program and Lodi Wines, please visit www.lodiwine.com and follow Lodi on Twitter at @Lodi_Wine as well as using the hashtag #LodiRules. Cheers! Hosts Stuart Spencer of the Lodi Winegrape Commission and winemaker of St. Amant Winery, and Ben Kolber, local winegrower, take us through the sustainable wines of Lodi, California. Lodi is just east of San Francisco and has provided grapes for producers all over the world since the 1800's. Today, there are approximately 80 wineries and tasting rooms, but more than 750 growers and over 100,000 acres planted to vineyards! In addition, Lodi is one of the leading regions in sustainable farming. In 2005, the Lodi Winegrape Commission created The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing, California’s first 3rd party certified sustainable winegrowing program which promotes practices that enhance biodiversity, soil and water health, community and employee well-being. Growers receive certification by passing an independent audit of their viticultural practices. The standards were thoroughly revised in 2013. These region-wide standards have been endorsed by Protected Harvest, a non-profit organization comprised of scientists, academics and environmentalists that certifies farmer’s use of stringent environmental growing standards. In 2012, 20,000 acres were “Certified Green” in the Lodi Appellation, and an additional 6,000 acres were certified in other regions throughout California. Approximately 20 wineries produce wines baring the Lodi Rules seal. A bottle of wine must be at least 85% from certified sustainable vineyards to use the logo on their label. Today, we'll be tasting: LangeTwins 2012 Sangiovese Rose (SRP $13), Bokisch Vineyards 2012 Albarino (SRP $18), St. Amant Winery 2011 Mohr-Fry Zinfandel (SRP $18) and Michael David Winery 2011 Bechtold Vineyard Ancient Vine Cinsault (SRP $20). Cheers to a healthy planet! April 16, 2013
