Paddle Steamer Medway Queen at Binfield Marina Isle of wight 1967.

This short footage was filmed by Professor Alan Robinson, the founder of the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society. Filmed in 1967 it, shows Medway Queen during her career as a floating nightclub. From 1966, Paddle Steamer Medway Queen was used as a marina clubhouse and nightclub at Island Harbour (formerly Binefield Marina) on the Isle of Wight. The club opened for business on Saturday 14th May of that year and annual membership was 3 guineas (£3.15) for one person or 4 guineas (£4.20) for a married couple. Temporary membership, presumably aimed at holiday makers, was 5 shillings (25p) per week. The club made full use of the ship’s 4 saloons with a restaurant, music and dancing including live music and discos, casino and a meeting/function room. Regular visitors remember that dancing became “more of a challenge” when the tide went out and the ship settled on the mud, heeling gently to one side! In 1970, a larger ship, Paddle Steamer Ryde (1937), renamed as Ryde Queen, joined Medway Queen at the marina site, also operating as a nightclub. The two premises operated alongside one another for a period, until the Medway Queen was eventually closed and fell into disrepair. Paddle Steamer Ryde still remains to this day in an extremely dilapidated condition in the same marina.
