Ashford Spinning Wheel Fix

On the last day of 2020 I decided to do a couple fixes and one fix a few days ago. The first fix a few days ago was to remove 5 hooks from one side of my flyer and put 4 of them between the others on the other side of the flyer to give me 9 hooks instead of 5. That makes for a much smoother bobbin after I wind on the thread as I spin. 5 was just not enough. Made to blobby of yarn on the bobbin. Old vintage wheels have lots of small hooks. I like the change. Today I did 2 things. One, I took off the adjustment screw and chucked it up on my drill press and proceeded to sand the ball to remove the old dark stain on the wood. Im not a fan of dark stain. I always liked natural colors of wood. I also sanded the shaft of the adjustment screw to clean off the rust. I did notice that the ball on the end was not very well centered and the ball is off center. Oh well. Guess that is what you get from cheaper wheels. Ashford is good but the quality is not fully up there with other higher quality wheels but it is a great wheel for the budget minded. Remember. The old VW will get you from point A to point B just as well as that fancy Ferrari. The other thing was to knock out the bobbin slop. The bobbins on the traditional have lots of wiggle room between the whorls and the flyer. So to remove much of that slop I made myself a nice little leather washer to put between the flyer and bobbin leaving just a little bit of wiggle. The leather washer was also oiled so if the bobbin did happen to rub against that washer it would still slip easily without much of any drag. I left plenty of room and made the washer pretty small but still quite functional. I removed the gap and still allowed easy spinning. I was well pleased.
