Mysterious Madrid: Secret Nun Cookies Uncovered

We are up early and ready to explore more of Madrid, Spain. We have another wonderful breakfast at Omar, the cute little bakery at the Thompson Madrid Hotel. We also had a surprise during breakfast! Who other than @ThePointsGuyArrivals came and sat at the table next to us. Brian Kelly, aka The Points Guy, is so very nice! We had such a delightful conversation with him. Our BIG quest for today is to find a hidden spot in Madrid where you can buy cookies from cloistered nuns. We watched a couple of different YouTube videos about this before coming to Madrid and our Devour Food Tour guide showed us how to get there last night, so let's go! It really wasn't to hard to find the location. In the Plaza del Conde Mirande, a simple set of wooden double doors in the wall of the Monasterio del Corpus Christi leads you to where you can buy cookies directly from cloistered nuns. Since the nuns have taken a vow to not have contact with the outside world, they have designed an ingenious system to get the cookies to you. Simply ring the buzzer that says Monjas (nuns) and ask "Tienes dulces hoy?" Do you have sweets today? I do recommend going early in te morning because they do sell out most days. Sometimes they have no cookies. I guess those are their days off! LOL Anyway, go early and hope for the best. If the nuns buzz you in, walk to the end of a rather dark corridor following signs that say "Torno" or turntable. You will see the "turno" as well as a menu of cookies. Our food tour guide and several others from Madrid recommended the sherry flavored cookies. You just say which cookies you want and how many and then place your money on the turntable. You rotate the table and like magic, your cookies appear! If you get change back, it also comes around on the turntable. It was an amazing and unique experience and if you are in Madrid, I highly recommend! The cookies were shortbread and covered in powdered sugar! At least our were! They were also pretty yummy! We took a short walk to Mercado de San Miguel to find a place to sit down and sample the cookies and to purchase a drink to wash them down. This market is such a delight! They have so many delicacies from Spain. We REALLY wanted to sample so many of the things we saw but we have a reservation at the World's Oldest Restaurant, Casa Botin, in just a few hours and we want to be good and hungry for that.
