Older farmers can continue to be safe and productive. The key is the ability of them and their families to recognise age-related risk factors, as well as the willingness to modify expectations and physical activity accordingly. As farmers grow older like all other workers, their physical capabilities will decline, and they face more strength, flexibility, eyesight, hearing and health challenges. The ability of an older farmer to carry out jobs they have always done can be more difficult and physically demanding. Dairy farmer John Fitzgerald farms in Portlaw, Co. Waterford, milking roughly 2022 cows in a spring calving system. John farms in partnership with his son Shane. Health and safety is very important to John as he gets older, so they are after taking a lot of steps on the farm to try and alleviate it. John's long term goal is to still assist on the farm and help out, but just on a smaller scale. It's not all about labour saving, it's about preventing accidents on the farm
