Police struggling to look after migrants detained at sea on way to Italy

(30 Nov 2013) African migrants allegedly caught trying to cross from Libya to Italy are being kept in a detention centre in damp and squalid conditions, it emerged on Saturday. Around 180 migrants were brought to the Abu Salim detention centre in Tripoli after the Libyan coast guard intercepted two migrants boats around three miles (five kilometres) out to sea on Thursday. They were originally taken to Tripoli Zoo, where the Libyan police have set up an identification centre, but were then transferred to Abu Salim detention centre. They were kept overnight on Friday in a barrack building at the Abu Salim detention centre, as heavy rain leaked through the roof and flooded the floor. On Saturday, the few who had blankets or a mattress sat huddled from the cold. The others, many in bare feet, stood around trying to stay dry. At one end of the building, three overused toilets release a powerful stench, leaving the migrants crowding at the other end of the centre where the smell is not so pungent. "I want to leave. I want to leave. Please," said one migrant. Many have come from Senegal, Gambia, Mali and Ghana to make the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Italy. One migrant said he had been charged 750 euro (950 US dollars) for the trip, which had barely made it from the shore before being caught. "They were arrested and handed to the authorities to be held in the centre until they get deported," said Commander Ali Melyan, an official at the Abu Salim detention centre. Officers at Abu Salim said they do not have the facilities to hold the migrants, which is why they have been left in such poor conditions. Some said the prison officers themselves were paying for the migrant's food. "They might get deported today, from Abu Salim, as the centre can't cope with this number (of detainees). It's not well equipped, not enough facilities are available in the centre," Melyan said. Italy has previously blamed the ongoing instability in Libya for contributing to the deaths of migrants trying to make their way from Africa to Europe. Tens of thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East try to cross the Mediterranean Sea each year, seeking a better life in Europe. In October two migrant ships sunk leaving over 400 dead.
