How does climate change affect the grape and wine industry?

Gary Pickering Professor of Biological Sciences and Psychology Faculty of Mathematics and Science Brock University I think we’re seeing that increased frequency of extreme weather events looks to be one of the biggest challenges for the industry. This can take the form of increased flooding, increased rainfall or increased drought during the growing season. These things impact the quality of the grapes, the ripeness of the grapes, and therefore the wine quality. We’re also worried about extreme cold events happening during the otherwise warmer winters, because in fact the vines don’t do well and this can affect their ability to survive the following season. So we’ve got multiple impacts taking various forms throughout the growing season. Having good models about what the climate will look like over the next several decades is a really important starting point for the industry. There are also several technologies that can help industry to adapt. On the viticulture side, for instance, we’ve developed a system called the VineAlert system, which is essentially an early warning program for grape growers where they can get real-time temperature information but also information about at what temperature their vines may suffer or even die if we get extreme cold events during winter. This helps them to know when best to turn on their wind machines or apply other interventions in the vineyard to minimize the damage to vines. We’re already seeing multi-million dollars of savings for the industry over the last couple of years since implementing VineAlert.
