This was an impromptu project to help clarify Art Blakey’s impeccable solo on the great jazz standard, “This I Dig of You”. Once familiar with Blakey’s vocabulary it’s impossible not to hear to the form, but at first it’s easy to get thrown off by some of his phrasing and ideas that go over the bar line. Although I use the term “elastic” that’s a bit of a stretch (no pun intended). There are a couple sections where he pushes or pulls slightly, but nowhere near the extent that you’d hear from drummers like Elvin Jones or Jack DeJohnette, whose solos can be extremely challenging to follow.
