Why an old 60amp 1g vs newer 130amp 3g alternator? Simple, the 1g puts less strain on the motor at lower rpm. The 3g will bog the motor and kill low end power. At the same rpm; a 1g is putting out 30amps where a 3g is putting out 110amps. That's nearly 4x the load on the engine. That's 1320 watts or another way to think is it's using nearly 2hp of the engines power. The 1g is only using 1/2hp. Yes more power is great but not at the expense of engine power. I intentionally tried to use a smaller drive pulley on the motor. It's a lot smaller than you would find on a vehicle driving this alternator(about 1/2). This is because I wanted to maintain as little engine power loss as possible at lower rpm. This means the engine needs more rpm to produce the same amps. An old Ford is going to turn around 2-2500rpm on average while driving(roughly 50amps output). This ATV/UTV is going to spin at 4000-6000rpm on average(roughly 50amps output).
