Plitvice Lakes National Park is undoubtedly one of the top Croatian landmarks. Extraordinary waterfalls tumble down to the flowing lakes, like nowhere else in the world. Over a million tourists come to the lakes yearly, and urbanization has come to the gates of the lakes, but the hinterland is still wild enough for the bear, wolf and lynx. The national park was established in 1949, while UNESCO added it to its list in in 1979. The national park protects nature and develops and manages tourism, the only economic activity on Plitvice Lakes. Today, more than a million people visit the lakes every year.
