Crested Goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus), Malampullu മലമ്പുള്ള്‌ (Bird Diversity Kerala)

The Crested Goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus) is a bird of prey found in Tropical Asia. In Malayalam vernacular, the bird is called “Malam Pullu” മലമ്പുള്ള്‌. The bird is related to other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards, and harriers and thus placed in the family Accipitridae. Crested Goshawk is a powerfully built hawk of forests, especially in hilly woods. Namesake crest is usually held low and not very visible. Adult has a gray head, brown wings, whitish underparts with thick orange-brown stripes in belly and streaks on breast, and white throat with black borders. The tail is long with four grayish brown bands. The female bird is much larger than the male. It has a browner head and brown underpart streaks and bars. Juvenile similar but sparingly marked underparts, and very short crest. The juvenile has pale fringes to its head feathers, and the underpart background colour is buff rather than white. This raptor has short broad wings and a long tail, both adaptations to manoeuvring through trees. The flight is a characteristic "slow flap, slow flap, straight glide", similar to other Accipiter species. The crested goshawk breeds in southern Asia from India and Sri lanka to southern China, Indonesia and the Philippines. It is primarily a lowland forest bird, and an all-year resident. Even in upland habitat it is resident in winter, for example in the foothills of Himalayas. In Kerala, though, the bird is usually found in sacred groves, forest plantations and areas with thick vegetation. Like its relatives, this secretive forest bird hunts birds, mammals and reptiles in woodland. It builds a stick nest in a tree and lays two or three eggs. In IUCN Red List, this bird is categorized as a species of "Least Concern" .
