We are at mp6 on the North Shore Mining (ex-Reserve Mining) Railroad as we watch two SD28's, and a SD18 fight the grade from Lake Superior at Beaver Bay to the top of the grade near the tailings dump. The train has SD28 # 1235 & 1234 and SD18 1226 for power. All units are powered by EMD 567D1 16 cylinder prime movers. It has a string of side dump cars loaded with tailings from the mined ore, and a compressor car, with the cab control caboose bring up the rear. The crew avoids turning the power, and can run the train from the caboose on its return trip to Beaver bay. SD28 info... The SD28 is a rare bird. There where only six built for use in the USA, and built between June-September 1966. Four where built for Reserve Mining, and two for the Columbus & Greenville. There was also six built for export to Korea, but they where classed as SDP28's. The SD28 was built on the SD35 frame, and ran with a 16 cylinder 567D1 which developed 1800 hp.
