The changing of the seasons brings constant motion, off the mountain, field to field, new country to new country, on the trucks off the trucks, in one gate and out another, grazing the best feed, and waiting for the snow to fly. Fall is a beautiful time of year, and we feel blessed to be able to spend the time in the places that we do, doing something we love and enjoy. We have reached the time of year where we give sheep haircuts, rope some rams, and head to the fall range. As we get ready to load off the mountain, we go through the sheep, checking the age of them by looking at their teeth, inspecting each one, and making sure everything is healthy and doing well after a summer on the mountain. As we prepare to head into winter, one of the things we do is tag the sheep. Tagging is the process where we shear off the wool from around the eyes and off the top of the sheeps’ head, to make sure they can see going into the snowy months of winter, we also clean up around their back end to help with breeding and keeping them clean until spring. With the sheep tagged and ready for fall the next step is putting in the rams so they can do their thing and get to work. We need to plan out when we want the rams to start breeding so we know when we need to come off the desert in the springtime, that way we can get the sheep shorn and ready for lambing. It takes a lot of thinking ahead to make it all work. We put bucking harnesses with chalk on some of our bucks so we can track their progress, and track the first sheep getting bred. After a few days we pull the harnesses, which requires a rope and a lot of running! If you have ever reeled in a giant ocean fish, that is about what it is like! Things can get western in a hurry!
