Pharoah believed they wanted to get out of work and were lazy, and then ordered the slave drivers to make the Hebrews work harder, they were to gather their straw and make bricks but the quota remained the same. He told his slavedrivers to pay no attention to lies. He was gaslighting them. The Hebrews worked even harder and were beaten because of the increased work. Also, the slavedrivers thought they were in trouble because the slaves had to keep up. The Hebrew slaves were angry at Moses and Aaron because they had become obnoxious in Pharoah’s eyes and his officials and had put a sword in their hands to kill them. vv.22-23 (God promises deliverance) Moses complains to God and tells God that He has not at all rescued His people.
