UFO 50 is a completely deranged new retro-inspired indie game where you get 50 games for the price of one. Developed and published by Mossmouth, of Spelunky fame, the idea is kinda that it's like Action 52 but with actually good games. Probably one of the most ambitious indie games I've seen. Of course this also contains a few shmups so I had to play them. The first game is Star Waspir, the vertical shmup in this. Stylistically it somewhat resembles a Hudson or Compile NES game of the era. Destroying enemies makes them drop items, these always drop in the order of E-G-G and repeat. Collecting certain combinations of these items gives you various effects: GGG - Option EEE - Bomb GEE - Special ability EGG - Multiplier +1 Each ship has their own options, bombs and special abilities. Multiplier will keep increasing with each EGG with no cap, but collecting any of the combination that aren't the above four will result in an immediate reset of the multiplier. That and dying. This scoring system is shockingly strict? It's game-long chaining and just one death or one wrong item pickup will completely destroy your scoring potential. It's a system that demands absolute perfection. But it's also like 10 minutes long or so. The balance here is kinda wack, you're incredibly underpowered and half the mechanics feel like they do nothing. Like it never feels worth it to go for bombs or special abilities, they are all really bad and take a long time to build up. Even the options don't feel worth it half the time because they die so quickly. Baffling stuff as well like the grey ship having homing options that just die immediately in this system and the yellow ship having a screen clear that doesn't kill enemies. Yellow has pretty good options though at least, you can park them in front of you to block bullets and they do decent damage. They're very useful for surviving stage 3. Stage 3 is about 99,9% of the difficulty of the game. Very dangerous enemies with random asteroid formations. The big asteroids have so much HP they might as well be unkillable. And if one of those happens to overlap on a big enemy you're kinda screwed. These asteroids also drop items so it's very easy to break your chain here. There is also the whole 16:9 vertical shmup thing going on. So yeah this game is kinda jank but the item and scoring system was fun enough for me to keep playing. How to get a good score in this: Build up big multiplier. Kill all the bee guys on stage 4. Those bees have an insane base value for some reason, like slightly less than the boss of the stage and there are tons of them. You get like 30k per kill and like 1.6 million in total here. You can probably milk the stage 3 boss because asteroids just keep appearing. Though I haven't tested if it's worth giving up the time bonus for it or if that boss actually times out. You actually get increasingly negative score if you take too long on stages lol: https://x.com/JaimersSTG/status/18368... It seems this game is also paying homage to Pink Sweets because items can apparently spawn offscreen and get immediately despawned: https://x.com/JaimersSTG/status/18369... For some reason the stage 5 boss and its zako don't give any score.
