Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India and is considered very prominent. It is the only south-facing Jyotirlinga in the world and is known to be 'dakshinamukhi'. It is a unique feature, upheld by the tantric shivnetra tradition to be found only in Mahakaleshwar among the 12 Jyotirlingas. The idol of Omkareshwar Mahadev is located in the sanctum above the Mahakal shrine. The glory of the Mahakaleshwar temple is found in various Puranas and many Sanskrit poets have eulogized it. Situated on the bank of river Shipra, Mahakal has its own power and presence which can be felt when you will enter the city. The present-day temple architecture is influenced by Chalukya, Maratha, and Bhumija styles. Today, its complex is so mesmerizing that it feels so peaceful and serene. Its complex has so many other temples as well. The temple observed arti four times a day, out of which bhasma arti is considered most powerful.
