Re-Reading Bode Omojola's 'Nigerian Art Music' Today: Chapter 4|| October 3, 2024.

Prof. Bode Omojola (The Hammond-Douglass Five College Professor of Music at Mount Holyoke College and the Five College Consortium [Amherst, Hampshire, Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst] USA ) Dr. Oladele Ayorinde (Project Convener) The publication of Bode Omojola’s Nigerian Art Music: With an Introduction Study of Ghanaian Art Music in the mid-1990s re-defines a path for Nigerian music scholarship, mitigating the schisms and tensions amidst contending scholarly approaches in the previous years. Drawing on archival material, interviews, and analysis of over five hundred compositions from Nigerian composers, Art Music in Nigeria provided new musicological pathways that unify methodological, analytical, and theoretical boundaries in the Nigerian music academy. Since the publication of Nigerian Art Music in 1995, the book has not only influenced new approaches but also opened multiple creative, artistic, and scholarly alternatives that further strengthen the Nigerian musicological landscapes. We are excited to have Prof. Bode Omojola lead the Organ House Reading Session. This session is the fourth in the series, providing a unique opportunity to gain insights into the discourse around African Pianism and its significance in the Nigerian, African, and global musicological landscapes. Prof. Omojola shares a nuanced reading and analysis of African Pianism, drawing cases from Akin Euba’s Scenes from Traditional Life, Ayo Bankole's Piano Sonata in C, and other sample works to provide a compelling case for the concept, approach, and its places in African music studies. In this session, we are focusing on Chapter 4: African Pianism. (pages 79-88). Reading: Omojola, Bode. 1995. “African Pianism”. Ibadan: IFRA-Nigeria, Chapter 4: page, 79-88.
